Islamic Bank of Britain (IBB) is in the middle of celebrating its 10th anniversary, and it’s become readily established as a pioneer of Islamic finance in the UK. It still boasts the widest range of Sharia-compliant retail financial products in the UK, and it seems few banks will be able to compete in the near future. In fact, IBB is actually beginning to diversify its product and service offerings to extend the sphere of Islamic banking in the UK. Soon it plans to reflect these changing conditions with a major rebrand.

Telefonica in talks to sell O2 to Hutchison Whampoa for £10bn

Hutchison Whampoa enters talks to buy Telefonica-owned O2 for £10.25 billion. In a move that would create the UK’s biggest mobile group, Hutchison Whampoa confirmed that it is in negotiations to buy Telefonica for £10.25 billion. However, Frank Sixt, the finance director of Hutchison, has said there is “still work to do” as they embark on several weeks’ worth of discussions. It’s the latest buy in a spending spree by Asia’s richest man, Li Ka-shing, who owns Hutchison Whampoa. Recently, Mr Li also spent £1.1 billion on Eversholt, to put him in control of a third of the UK’s trains.

Germany and France to kick-start €300 billion European investment push

In line with plan outlined by European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, Germany and France are joining forces to push towards a European investment programme. The eurozone’s struggles have been well-documented over the past few years since the financial crisis, but a new push from France and Germany could see a renewed period of investment across the European Union. Bloomberg reports that government officials have confirmed that France and Germany are working together on proposals to involve the European Investment Bank (EIB) in granting loans to businesses. Apparently, the initiative is due to be presented to a meeting of finance ministers from across the bloc’s member states on Friday, 12 September.

Singapore and Hong Kong compete to be Asia’s top financial market

Singapore and Hong Kong have much in common, but they are also competitors in Asia’s financial system. When you think of finance in Asia, there are a few distinct locations that spring to mind. Tokyo and Shanghai are among the most well-known, but by far the most influential on the global and regional stages are Hong Kong and Singapore. The two jurisdictions have a lot in common in many respects. They’re small cities that punch well above their weight in the global financial landscape, commonly used as bases for businesses looking to invest or expand into key Asian markets. Both have strong links with China, as well as with other key emerging economies across Asia-Pacific.

Major UK companies to contribute more in tax, says report

PwC has found that the UK’s biggest businesses will see their tax hit record levels this year. PwC has highlighted the contribution of big business to the UK economy with new figures from their latest Total Tax Contribution survey. The survey shows that Britain’s largest companies paid the highest tax revenues ever recorded in 2014: a reminder that big businesses make a significant contribution to the UK economy. PwC’s 100 Group, comprised of the finance directors of large companies and some multinationals operating in the UK, revealed that they have collectively paid some £80 billion this year. This is a rise of £2 billion from 2013.

Strong growth expected by UK SMEs

Nearly two-thirds (65%) of SME owners believe that a bright future is on the way with forecasts of growth of up to as much as 40% over the course of the next two years, according to the annual survey of SMEs in the UK carried out by Wesleyan Bank, the specialist commercial finance provider. The SME Heroes or Zeros 2018 report shows that 54% have greater confidence regarding the prospects of their companies in 2019, with the possible impact of Brexit a source of concern for just 11% of respondents. Even in spite of the uncertain economy of the UK, the findings demonstrate that there has been a significant shift from business owners in terms of defiance.

US crowdfunding laws could be changed before they take effect

Rules governing crowdfunding in the US could be amended before they are even fully introduced. More and more small businesses and startups are taking to crowdfunding as a means of raising finance without going through the banks. But in the US, small firms are finding this much harder than they are elsewhere, and legislation has so far done fairly little to help. Changes to US security rules were enshrined in the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act in 2012, increasing the number of investors a private company can have from 500 to 2,000. The law also removed some barriers faced …

London could gain billions from booming digital tech sector

A new study has found that London’s booming digital tech sector could contribute billions to the capital’s economy. London has long been known as a major finance centre, but in recent years another industry has taken root there to give the capital’s economy a considerable boost. According to a new report by Oxford Economics for promotional body London and Partners, the sector could make a massive contribution in terms of both economic activity and jobs. Details of the study have not yet been released, with only one page of key findings having been published so far.

LSBF Alumni Interview: Kyle Tyrrell

LSBF ACCA alumnus Kyle Tyrrell is the true personification of a high achiever. Alongside his position as a Finance Business Partner at AXA Insurance UK, he qualified as an ACCA-certified accountant in 2014 and is now setting up his own business – a catering company called ‘My Little Kitchen’ with a business partner. Kyle also was one of the finalists of the PQ Awards 2014, in the PQ of the Year category. We spoke to Kyle about his reasoning behind pursuing an ACCA qualification, the benefits of studying ACCA at LSBF and what his advice for new students would be.   Here are some excerpts from our conversation with Kyle…

500 banks sign up for Apple’s new mobile wallet service

Apple says that over 500 financial institutions have signed up to its new payment service. When Apple launched its new mobile wallet service last month, it would have been easy to lose sight of it in the furore over the tech giant’s long-awaited smartwatch. But it’s a major innovation in its own right that will finally introduce near-field communication (NFC) payment technology to iPhones and iPads, as they have existed in some Android models for some time. The world of finance clearly agrees, since Apple says that its new mobile payments service has already seen more than 500 separate banks and financial institutions sign up.

British confidence in economic growth at 5 year high, shows study

A new poll from Ipsos Mori has revealed that British people have more confidence in the economy than at any point in the last five years. Currently, half of the respondents said they felt positive about the state of the UK's finance. This is a dramatic rise compared to two and a half years ago, when only 13 per cent felt the same way. Based on the 24 countries covered by the survey, it was found that 40 per cent of citizens had confidence in their nation’s economy. This means the UK is performing above the average in this area. The global average has also risen significantly since November 2012, when only 25 per cent said they were confident about their country’s finances.

LSBF’s MA in Finance Investment Programme Recognised by CMI

CMI

London School of Business and Finance is proud to announce the confirmed recognised mapping of its MA in Finance and Investment programme with The Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

Quoting CMI:The MA in Finance and Investment is a flexible online master's degree delivering the skills and expertise sought by leading organisations across the globe, designed to meet the needs of existing and potential managers in all sectors of employment.

The theories and concepts examined in this programme have never been more business-critical, and our graduates will complete the programme possessing the advanced knowledge and professional attributes demanded by the world's foremost employers.”

Karina Kizhner, Managing Director of London School of Business and Finance, said: “Whilst this is the first of many, we are thrilled to continue the start of 2021 by having one of our master’s programmes recognised and mapped to CMI Professional Standard.”

The mapping to CMI Professional Standard is a testament to LSBF's commitment to its students. Something CMI commented on within their Mapping Summary was that: “The programme endeavours to provide a stimulating and intellectually demanding environment, in which students are encouraged to engage with the academic literature, case studies, and each other, whilst reflecting on their own finance-related experiences.”

LSBF is proud to be working with CMI, helping to shape the graduates of tomorrow to possess the skills, advanced knowledge and professional attributes needed and, in some cases, demanded by today’s employers.

In today’s ever-changing environment, CMI will be a lifelong career partner to LSBF’s students, giving them a competitive edge through tailored support, tools, events and resources to develop their management and leadership potential.

LSBF students will also receive a Recognised Programme Partner certificate confirming the award is recognised against the CMI Professional Standards.
