AAT Syllabus and Exams

The AAT syllabus will consist of 4 exams in total for Level 2 Certificate in Accounting, and 2 exams under the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping. Through each qualification you’ll learn practical skills to prepare you for the workplace, from basic finance administration skills to preparing final accounts and complex management accounting tasks.

Exam regulations

  • All assessments are computer based and sat at an AAT approved exam venue.
  • Each exam is allocated a percentage mark.
  • On completion of the whole level, an overall grade is awarded:
    • Pass - 70-79%
    • Merit - 80-89%
    • Distinction - 90-100%
  • Exam dates: Assessments at all levels are on demand and not at set times of the year for all unit assessments.
  • Students should only schedule for the synoptic assessment once all other required units for that Level have been scheduled.
  • Percentage marks for level 2 unit assessments are available immediately on completion of the assessment.
  • Percentage marks for level 2 synoptic assessment is available 6 weeks after submission.
AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting

This qualification will prepare you for any junior accounting roles. It is a great entry-level course for a career in the finance industry. It provides a solid foundation for all students as it covers such areas as double-entry bookkeeping, costing principles and an introduction to the business ethics along with sustainability demands. Additionally, students also learn about effective communication skills.

AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping

The skills gained from this qualification will help students seek employment with confidence or progress to further study. Learners will develop essential knowledge required across accountancy and finance roles, applying bookkeeping skills to complete transactions accurately. They will also understand how to process financial information in line with established procedures and deadlines, building reliability and competence in managing financial tasks effectively in a professional environment.

AAT Level 2

  • Up to 6 - 12 months

  • Most students start at level 2 and progress to level 3 and then level 4. It is possible to enter directly at level 3, depending on prior qualifications and experience.
  • In exceptional circumstances, students can enter directly onto level 4.
