Mayor calls for London to promote women into senior roles

Mayor calls for London to promote women into senior roles

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has called for more to be done in London to help promote more women into senior roles.

The comments come after the Mayor published the Greater London Authority (GLA) Group’s gender pay data, which revealed a gender pay gap at several organisations in the city, including City Hall.

Prioritising

The GLA Group’s gender pay gap comes as a result of there not being enough women in senior roles, an issue that the Mayor is prioritising. Last year’s gender pay figures compared with data from November 2016 show that whilst there has been an improvement in the gender pay gap, the differences are small, with the gap dropping from 4.82% to 4.81%.

London organisations and businesses are taking steps to tackle the gender pay issue, with City Hall introducing several measures to help promote training and progression opportunities to get more women into senior roles.

Figures also revealed that the gender pay gap for full-time workers in the city is 16.20%, compared to 18.10% nationally.

Equality

Commenting on the action that he has taken to tackle the gender pay issue and how businesses addressing the issue would benefit London, Khan said: “I am a proud feminist at City Hall and that’s why earlier this year I launched the #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign not only to mark the progress that’s been made on women’s equality over the past 100 years, but to tackle gender inequality in all its forms. I reiterate my call to London’s businesses and organisations to step up efforts to address the pay gap and help make our capital one of equality, opportunity and progress.”
