Banking and financial services sector dominates list of top employers

Businesses in the banking and financial services sector have dominated the list of top undergraduate employers in this year’s RateMyPlacement rankings.

J.P. Morgan was named the best undergraduate employer in the UK for 2017-2018 by students, with the banking and financial services company jumping up 16 places from last year’s position.

Criteria

Companies were ranked on criteria such as whether students felt valued by colleagues, overall impressions of the company, training and development opportunities, transferable skills gained, and amount of responsibility given. J.P. Morgan ranked highly in all areas, with the company receiving an average score of 8.87 out of 10.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch came in second place on this year’s rankings, followed by professional services and Big Four firms PwC and KPMG, which came in third and fourth place respectively.

Financial investment management company Rothschild & Co came in fifth place, up from 11th place last year, while law firm Taylor Wessing came in sixth place, up from eighth place in last year’s rankings.

Barclays was also voted a top employer among students, with the bank coming in seventh place, up by 12 places from 19th place in 2016, followed by recruitment company Hays in eighth place.

Though investment banking company Goldman Sachs and financial services firm Morgan Stanley dropped three places from last year’s rankings, both still remained in the top ten, coming in ninth and tenth place respectively.

Important

Commenting on the rankings, RateMyPlacement.co.uk Co-Founder Ollie Sidwell said this year’s results show financial services companies have delivered on investing in students’ futures and listened to their voice. He added it’s important for industries to pay attention to what their students are saying as it will allow them to better strengthen their workforce.
