Travelling could help make UK adults more employable, research shows

Travelling could help UK adults to gain invaluable skills and make them more employable, according to research from hostel booking website Hostelworld.
The research surveyed 1,000 people in the UK, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, South Korea and Brazil, and found that 64 per cent of UK adults and 82 per cent of employers believe that travelling can make people more employable.
The survey revealed the main benefits of travelling, which was defined as being away in another location for at least a month. Over 35 per cent of respondents believe that travelling can help to boost confidence, whilst 37 per cent said that it can help to improve people skills and 35 per cent think that it can help people to adapt to new situations.
Other benefits include helping to improve communication skills, providing a more global view and helping people to be better with their money, cited by 31 per cent, 20 per cent and 19 per cent respectively.
Over 60 per cent said that the work that they did abroad looked good on their CV, whilst over 45 per cent of people who travelled made connections with people who helped them to get a job.
Hostelworld CEO Feargal Mooney commented that thousands of young people are going to be graduating this summer and wondering about what they are going to do next – however, with increasing competition in the jobs market, candidates are finding it hard to stand out.
He added that travelling gives people the time and space to consider what they would like to do in life and ignites their passions, and it provides them with valuable skills, including increased confidence, which will help them to stand out from their peers.
