Before you decide to take an MBA, you might want to learn more about different types of MBAs, admissions requirements, MBA rankings, and the MBA graduates’ career prospects.
The below sections contain commonly asked questions about MBAs to help you find out what an MBA involves and whether it suits your career goals.
MBA stands for ‘Master of Business Administration’ and is a course that covers a whole range of business topics, such as management, accounting, and marketing. It is an internationally recognised postgraduate course. MBAs are normally chosen by professionals who are already working, but want a qualification that will open up more career opportunities in their field.
Many MBA courses offer a great deal of flexibility, allowing you to choose how long you study for and what medium you use. Depending on whether you choose to study full-time or part-time, an MBA can take between one and three years to complete. You can also choose to study online if you cannot attend on-campus courses.
Studying for an MBA can make you a better candidate for the job you want, particularly if you are aiming for managerial roles. You can also choose to specialise in the sector that takes your interest. Whether you are interested in fashion or finance, an MBA can be a great asset when you are searching for jobs or aiming for a promotion.
MBA courses give you a deep understanding of vital business principles, as well as developing practical skills that will help you operate effectively in the workplace, such as critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving.
At LSBF, we make sure that you develop a high proficiency in all of these skills, which you will rely on every day in any leading business position. We have partnered with a number of business schools in order to ensure that you will get the best MBA experience possible.
In particular, LSBF has partnered with the Italian Telematic University Uninettuno to run the Global MBA programme in London and online. Another prestigious partner is the Grenoble Graduate School of Business (GGSB), a triple accredited French business school, which runs the GGSB MBA programme in London.
GMAT stands for ‘Graduate Management Admission Test’, which is an exam used all over the world to test whether a student will do well on an MBA course. The GMAT is managed by GMAC, the Graduate Management Admission Council.
GMAT scores help business schools to decide which students they will accept onto their courses. It is a common part of entrance requirements for MBA programmes and other management related courses.
The exam has four sections:
- analytical writing assessment
- integrated reasoning
- quantitative section
- verbal section
It takes three and a half hours and covers essential abilities that a student will need to be successful during a professional management course. These include skills like interpreting information given in a range of formats, solving quantitative problems with mathematics, and reading comprehension. It is a standardised test, which means that every student who sits the exam is answering the same questions.
The abbreviation ‘GMAT CAT’ may sometimes be used instead of just GMAT. ‘CAT’ stands for ‘Computerised Adaptive Testing’: this means that the test adapts to the level of the person taking the test. However, only two of the GMAT sections use this method.
LSBF does not require a GMAT as part of enrolment for any of our MBA courses. However, if you already have a GMAT score, it will help us to process your application and you are more likely to succeed. This is especially relevant if you do not meet our work experience requirements or other criteria.
As mentioned in the ‘What is an MBA?’ section, you have the option of choosing a specialised course that will give you expertise in the business sector you want to work in.
A general MBA offers you an overview of essential business practices and theory that can be applied across all the fields, whereas a Pathway MBA will give you skills for a specific field. You can choose whichever option suits your career aims better, though both have significant strengths.
If you decide to take a general MBA, you will gain a broad understanding of management, and will be able to use your knowledge wherever you work. However, you will not have an in-depth knowledge of any particular industries.
An MBA Pathway programme provides deep insights into how a specific business sector works and how to operate successfully within it. However, taking this option means that you may have limited your career direction to roles only within the field that you have chosen (though this is not a problem for students who are fully dedicated to a specific role).
LSBF offers a number of pathways within each MBA programme in partnership with the Grenoble Graduate School of Business (GGSB). This means students can follow their preferred career direction and will be able to fulfil job specifications as soon as they finish studying. A student who has taken a specialised MBA programme will be a much more viable candidate for jobs in the sector they have trained for.

GGSB MBA programme is offered in partnership with and validated by the Grenoble Graduate School of Business (GGSB). GGSB MBA modules are available at the GGSB campus in Grenoble as well as LSBF London, giving students the opportunity to study in France, depending on which specialisation is selected.
As there are hundreds of colleges and educational institutions that offer MBAs, rankings have been set up to help students decide where they would like to study and find out the quality of programmes at different colleges. Many leading publications, such as the Financial Times and The Economist, have developed their own ratings and league tables for business schools.
Categories in MBA rankings are often separated by area (such as USA, Europe, and worldwide), subject, and method (i.e. full-time or part-time).
For example, GGSB’s MBA programme was ranked 25th in Europe in The Economist’s “Which MBA 2014” ranking. The programme was also ranked 1st in France and 10th in Europe in the graduate employment category in the QS Return on Investment Report 2015.
An accreditation is a stamp of approval from an independent organisation that conducts research into the quality of tuition at educational institutions. Alongside rankings, checking whether a business school has any accreditations is an easy way to tell if students are likely to have a good experience there.
There are many different accreditations that business schools can aim for. However, some accreditations are more prestigious than others. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Association of MBAs (AMBA), and European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) are the three largest and most influential accreditation bodies.
If a business school is recognised as a high quality institution by all three of these associations, students are almost guaranteed to have an excellent experience. It is known as a “triple accreditation”, and as of December 2014, only 67 out of over 13,000 schools were triple accredited.
The Grenoble Graduate School of Business (GGSB), LSBF’s partner for the GGSB MBA programme in London, is one of these 67 schools. This means it is in the top 1% of the world’s business schools to be triple accredited.
In general, gaining an MBA will boost your potential salary, as it will give you experience and knowledge that may have taken you a long time to acquire by yourself.
The Careers Survey prepared by AMBA showed that the average (mean) salary of MBA graduates from AMBA accredited business schools working in the UK now stands at over £82,000 (the highest since 2004). ().
Forbes also conducted some research comparing the salary of students before and after completing their MBA. They found that post-MBA starting pay was higher by 50% compared to pre-MBA pay; after five years of employment, this figure increased again by 80%.
The investment students make by choosing to study an MBA is quickly repaid; generally the more educated you are, the higher your salary can be. However, there are some factors that can affect your post-MBA salary – for example, the reputation of the college you studied at or your employment history and work experience.
47% of GGSB’s new MBA graduates were employed less than 2 months after graduation at the time of the survey*. As the majority of GGSB MBA international graduates are working across the globe, salary levels should be compared to regional buying power. However, 50% of MBA students are earning an annual salary of over €42,000.

Many of the students who choose to study an MBA are already working. They may take it to change their career path or increase their chances of promotion.
Whatever your reasons for studying an MBA, gaining this qualification is very likely to help you get the job you want. As mentioned above, a general MBA can give you transferable skills that you can apply to any job, while a specialised course will ensure that you have the abilities needed for a specific role (though both types of course will cover essential business skills).
Businesses are often keen to hire employees with professional qualifications, as it shows that they are dedicated to their careers. Completing an MBA will give you an edge over others in the competitive job market.
The employment statistics of MBA graduates look better each year, and are mentioned often by worldwide information agencies.
Bloomberg found that “not only are more companies hiring MBAs, those that do are hiring more of them” from a 2012 survey, while the Financial Times found in 2013 that “corporate demand for MBA graduates is on the up.
” One of the most important factors is the availability of the Careers department in the business school, which makes every effort to facilitate the employability of MBA graduates.
The Careers department at LSBF helps students by:
- Running careers training and development sessions for soft skills, interview approaches, and CV preparation
- Conducting career related events with open access business talks from industry professionals
- Running the JobWire service, delivering information about new job opportunities, internships, and work placement offers from employers all over the UK
