UK banks now offering mobile cheques service

Lloyds, Barclays and Halifax are now offering a service that enables customers to pay in cheques with their mobile phone.

Lloyds and Halifax quietly introduced the feature, which is available to customers who use mobile banking, back in October, whilst Barclays is still testing the service.

Instructions

Using the new service, customers can now pay in cheques by taking a photo of the cheque on their phone. The feature can be accessed through the Lloyds, Barclays or Halifax banking app, with customers simply being required to log into their mobile app and search for the option to pay in cheques.

Once they have accessed this option, they will be provided with instructions on how to use their mobile phone to take a photo of the cheque that they wish to pay into their account.

Whilst the service is available to customers of Lloyds and Halifax, those who bank with Barclays are required to email chequedepositpilot@barclays.com in order to have access to the full service.

According to Barclays, 175,000 customers who have signed up have used the banking app on their phone to successfully pay in cheques.

Cleared

Customers will soon be able to have their cheques cleared within just one day, a process that previously took six working days.

Whilst Lloyds, Halifax and Barclays are giving customers the option of paying in their cheques using their phone, other banks have yet to offer the service, with HSBC and Santander set to introduce it in the New Year.
