Britain is a top location for entrepreneurs, according to study

Britain has been named one of the top places for entrepreneurs in a new study from the Mara Foundation and Opinium Research.

The study looked at which countries provide the best entrepreneurial environments, with the UK coming in fifth place above the United States and most of the EU.

Criteria

The research studied 85 countries, assessing them alongside a set of criteria such as entrepreneurial environment, finance, policy, infrastructure and education.

Singapore topped the list of countries, whilst the UK was rated highly for finance, with one of the main contributing factors being its appeal to venture capital investors and investors in private equity.

However, the UK scored lower than other countries for “attitudes”, a result of an absence of interest of the standard citizen for setting up their own company.

There has been much support for small businesses in the UK through schemes such as Small Business Saturday, which is set to take place on 3rd December. The Government has also announced an extra £400 billion of funding through the British Business Bank to help small businesses that are seeking finance.

Opportunities

Commenting on the index, Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson said that it “will help identify opportunities for business, not-for-profits and government to work together to create the right environment for entrepreneurs to thrive and to create jobs.”

Enterprise Nation Founder Emma Jones stated that it is absolutely the Government’s responsibility to invest in the infrastructure and technology that is needed to boost the economy.
