Small business staff are the most committed, research finds

Small business staff are the most committed

People who work for a small business are the most committed, according to research from card payment machine provider Paymentsense.

The research surveyed 1,000 SME workers in the UK and found those who work for smaller businesses are more engaged. This is compared to their counterparts, working for larger firms.

The research found 47 per cent of respondents working for a business with ten or fewer employees often work unpaid overtime because they want the company to do well.

This figure decreases for businesses with more employees, dropping to 30 per cent for those working for companies with 11 to 50 employees, and 21 per cent for companies of 101 to 250.

The study also found as small businesses grow, managers are more likely to intervene when it comes to staff working overtime. 32 per cent of those working for a company with more than 50 employees cite pressure from their manager as the main reason for working overtime. This figure drops to 25 per cent for those working in companies with up to ten employees.

Commenting on the research, leading business coach Clare Dimond said: “Achieving alignment between individual and organisational purpose is like adding a Formula One engine to a family car.”

She added that when someone has belief and passion in what they are doing, all of their resources, energy, ideas, and experience are available.
