Millennials want their own business, shows research
Over 35 per cent of millennials want to be their own bosses and have their own business, according to a new study from Opinium Research.
The research found that over 50 per cent of millennials hope to become self-employed by the time they reach their late 20s.
Over 60 per cent of those wishing to be self-employed said that creating something that is their own was the main appeal, while 54 per cent cited the prospective flexible working hours as the main reason for wanting to work for themselves.
Over 45 per cent of millennials also believe that owning their own business will enable them to make a lot of money.
The research also revealed a gender gap when it comes to millennials running their own business, with 20 per cent of young men who want to be their own boss hoping to move into technology, compared to just 2 per cent of young women.
Women were found to be more interested in the creative industry, with 15 per cent wishing to start up their own business as an author or artist, compared to just 8 per cent of men.
Commenting on the gender barriers in certain industries, Opinium Research Researcher, Rachael Camp, said: “Although we’re not short of young entrepreneurial woman, their lack of presence in the booming tech industry should prompt the tech leaders to consider why and what can be done to change this.”
