Cyber security an excellent career choice

Cyber security is an “excellent career choice” for developing technical and business skills, according to ISACA.

ISACA’s 2016 Cyber Security Perceptions study looked at the perceptions of cyber security as a career and explored cyber security awareness in organisations.


The research, which surveyed over 2,000 UK consumers, found that more than half of office workers have not been provided with cyber security awareness training.

Nearly 20 per cent of respondents have been a victim of a phishing attack, whilst one in three said that they would choose a fast internet connection over a secure one.

The survey also found that 16 per cent of respondents have revealed their password to others, 15 per cent have had access to someone else’s USB stick, and 14 per cent have used a password that would be easy for others to guess.

Despite these habits, over 75 per cent of respondents said that they would feel confident when it comes to being able to protect their personal data, and 74 per cent are confident that their employer would be able to do so.


For career perceptions on cyber security, the research found that over half of respondents believe that cyber security is an important career, whilst almost one in five said that the profession is too male-dominated.

Commenting on the research, ISACA CEO Matt Loeb, CGEIT, CAE stated: “Cyber security is an excellent career choice for both men and women who want to play a critical role in their organisations and who are looking to develop a strong mix of business and technical skills – and they can expect to be well compensated for these skills.”
