Plans to invest over £2 million in Birkenhead’s town centre have been announced.

Wirral’s Business Improvement District, which has been renamed Birkenhead First, will be using the money to carry out improvements on the town centre and provide business support services over the next five years.

The plan will also include a redevelopment of the Europa Pool site, with facilities such as restaurants and a hotel to be added to the area.

Wirral Chamber of Commerce has been working with the council and businesses in the local area to develop the district. Chamber Chief Executive Paula Basnett stated that the aim is to create a “long-term initiative that is right for the town and for the businesses in the area.”

She added that she is confident that they will make a “real difference”, and that they want people to use the retail and business sectors to enjoy quality time in the area.

Steering group Chairman and McEwan Wallace Director Alastair Gould also believes that the Birkenhead First initiative will be beneficial. He said that he is confident that it is a “very positive move” for the town and for businesses in the area.

Council Leader Cllr Phil Davies added that there is a common goal shared by Wirral Council, local businesses, and the public sector to “build a strong thriving economy and attract investment to power growth.”
