Undergraduate Student Experience - Living in Birmingham

The UK's second largest city is an exciting, multicultural centre of more than a million people. Affectionately known as the ‘City of a thousand trades’, Birmingham is one of the UK's major centres of business and commerce, with a rich history to match. It was, therefore, a natural choice for our London School of Business & Finance (LSBF) campus.

The city enjoys a privileged position in the centre of England, making it an ideal location for home and overseas students alike. First-class transport links mean that London is just over an hour away and Manchester is less than two hours away by train. What's more, our state-of-the art campus in Birmingham lies right in the city centre, only a few minutes' walk from Birmingham New Street station, putting everything that this fascinating city offers on your doorstep.

Culture

Birmingham is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the UK and people from more than 150 countries study at our campuses, so you'll be exposed to different languages and traditions every day. This multicultural character gives Birmingham a vibrant atmosphere and a vast array of different cuisines for you to sample. There is also a strong business culture in Birmingham, with some of the world's largest multinational corporations having offices here. Studying at LSBF in Birmingham will not only dramatically improve your career prospects, it will also widen your cultural horizons.

Nightlife and Shopping

From the sprawling nightlife district of Broad Street to the boutique bars and award-winning restaurants of St. Paul's Square, Birmingham really comes alive at night. The city is home to a large student population, ensuring that nightlife is eclectic and relatively inexpensive. Whether you're looking for bustling clubs, a gourmet meal, performances from world famous musicians, or a night at the opera, Birmingham has it all.

Birmingham also offers an outstanding range of options for shoppers. The modern Bullring Centre (one of Europe's largest shopping centres) and the designer outlets of the Mailbox are both just moments away from LSBF. You can explore charming markets selling goods from around the world, as well as unique, independent shops, such as those at the Custard Factory centre. Owing to its long history of craftsmanship and commerce, Birmingham also has a renowned Jewellery Quarter.

Business

The evidence of Birmingham's status as a global trade centre is everywhere to see, particularly in the city centre, where LSBF is based. If you study with us, you'll be surrounded by giants of the banking, insurance and law sectors, amongst other leading international organisations. Two of the UK's ‘big four’ banks were founded in Birmingham and the city is constantly attracting new businesses. Indeed, it has been designated the third best place in the UK to locate a business.

Excellent transport links and first-rate business facilities contribute to Birmingham's success. A major international airport and world-class venues such as the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) and International Convention Centre (ICC) have made it a preferred business meeting point, accounting for a sizeable amount of the UK's conference trade.

Attractions

Whether you study at LSBF for weeks, months or years, you'll always find something new and interesting to do in and around Birmingham. See celebrated works of art and precious historical relics at the superb Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery; taste delicious chocolate treats at Cadbury World; or witness local teams compete in every sport from football to basketball.

Stratford-upon-Avon, which sits just outside Birmingham, gave birth to one of the UK's most famous sons and its greatest ever playwright: William Shakespeare. Visit this idyllic, riverside town to see Shakespeare's house, row along the Avon and, if you're lucky enough, witness a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Just minutes away from Stratford lies the impressive sight of Warwick Castle: one of the UK's most well-preserved medieval castles. Having stood for nearly 1,000 years, it's the perfect place to delve into the fascinating history of the Birmingham region and the UK as a whole.

Outdoor Space

In addition to scenic squares and waterways, Birmingham also boasts numerous parks and nature reserves. Relax after class with a walk around Birmingham Botanical Gardens, or visit Sutton Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe. For spectacular views of the city, as well as the surrounding countryside, take a trip to the beautifully unspoilt Lickey Hills. A modern metropolis on the edge of beautiful open spaces, Birmingham combines the best of both worlds / is the ideal study destination.
