Part-time MSc Finance Structure

Our part-time study options are designed to offer campus learning to those with fulltime commitments. You can study in the evening, at the weekend or both. Our central London, Manchester, and Birmingham campuses are easy to reach, while our state-of the art facilities and industry renowned lecturers are all here to take your career further.

You can also compliment your campus study with our award-winning online learning platform. This offers HD studio-recorded lectures and support resources around the clock. Study and revise in a click of your mouse.

The part-time MSc Finance is primarily studied over a 24+ month schedule. This consists of a minimum of 18 months minimum for modules, and an estimated 6 months for your dissertation.  The MSc Finance has 6 taught modules studied over a period of 3 months. You will receive interim awards throughout the programme, helping you to monitor your progress.

Every module consists of 30 study hours and 2 Assessment hours. Study can be during weekends and/or evenings. Each module will consist of 2 workshops, a revision session and an assessment.  The workshops will consist of one mandatory Saturday class followed by either a Sunday class or 2 evening classes during the week.  Online revision is also included.

Precise timetables will vary depending on your needs, but the average course lasts around 24 months.

    Financial Risk Management
    This module will introduce principles and concepts essential to developing an understanding of risk, and its management. Standards, requirements, and legal expectations for formal risk management within an organisation will all be examined in depth to gain the appreciation of risk characteristics and influences necessary to implement effective risk management.

    Derivatives and Alternatives Investments
    This module is aimed at providing both soft and professional level skills to students studying the MSc in Finance, the MSc in Risk Management or the MSc in Investment Banking and Securities.

    This module introduces techniques for using any form of derivatives instruments as both a risk and portfolio management tool. It also helps the students to design and develop financial models and drawing from theories in international financial management, and how such models can be improved using the derivatives.

    This module provides a rigorous foundation in the study of derivatives and alternative investment securities and their role in risk management. Students will also understand the features and requirements of using these derivatives and the combination of them to hedge risks in complex financial circumstances

    This module will develop knowledge and skills in the application of management accounting techniques to evaluate business choices and promote efficient and effective use of resources. Students will study strategies to assess the performance of a business from a financial and non-financial perspective, appreciating risk and allowing for external factors.

    International Financial Management
    This module aims to help students apply the relevant skills and exercise professional judgement as expected of a senior financial executive or advisor, in taking or recommending decisions relating to the financial management of an organisation, leveraging on knowledge gained from corporate finance.

    Equity and Fixed Income Investments
    Students will develop a deeper understanding of different segments in the fixed-income and equity investment markets. The module will introduce the valuation of fixed/equity income securities, the management of fixed/equity income investment portfolios, and examination of how private equity funds are raised and structured. The syllabus provides a detailed analysis of the types of finance used in private equity and fixed income assets and an evaluation of the short and long-term performance of these investments.

    Buyout Strategies: LBOs and MBOs
    Students will be familiarised with these concepts through an in-depth examination into the key differences between the core M&A buyout strategies, and the implications and reasoning behind each. Leveraged buyouts (LBOs) and management buyouts (MBOs) will be the focus of this module and strategies and processes pertaining to each will be addressed.

The management of portfolios in compliance with these policies poses interesting challenges and this module offers solutions to students aspiring to success in this niche market.

    Bank management
    The aim of the module is to introduce students to the competitive landscape facing the financial services industry. It will enable them to consider the effects of this competitive environment on key aspects of the industry, such as the impact of new business models on the principles and structures of lending.

    This module aims also to provide students with an insight into the major features of the banking business and to provide a framework for the understanding of the different types of banks and banking activities. Students will examine the changing business characteristics of the commercial banking industry while focusing at the same time on the global nature of banking activities.

    It will support students in developing a critical analysis of the structures and strategies of the industry and in establishing a global understanding of banking businesses and market structures. It will also set out a framework for international comparison, which will be drawn upon to synthesize a critical analysis of challenges facing the financial services sector.

    Finally, it will enable students to evaluate how strategic forces impact the operational structures of banking institutions and the relationship of the industry to its key customer segments through the lens of bank lending strategy and operations

    • TOEFL – minimum score of 93 (internet-based), 240 (computer-based), or 587 (paper-based)
    • PTE 59 – (or equivalent)
  • GMAT is not an obligatory requirement, but is considered an advantage and may be required for some applications. (Target score 550)
