SHIPPING MANAGEMENT

CORE SUBJECTS

Shipping Management

This module inquires into the various elements that are common to the different sectors of shipping industry to provide an integrated picture of how the industry works. Core concepts under review will involve the logistics and freight forwarding requirements of the different modes of transportation; the effects of world trade, major commodity flows and seasonal changes on the shipping industry as a whole; the role of regulatory agencies in the shipping industry; the difference between tramp markets and bulk trade and how the freight rates relate to each market; and awareness of the links between trade activity and international transport requirements.

The principal objectives of the course are the following:

  • Gain an understanding of the various sectors in the shipping industry
  • Gain the necessary communication skills in order to deal with the different stakeholders operating in this industry
  • Understand the principles of the law relating to the most common matters relating to the shipping industry
  • Gain the necessary skills in order to predict and avoid potential difficulties before they arise
  • Have adequate knowledge of resolving disagreements and have the knowledge of solving any issues that might have arisen

Learning Outcomes for the module

  • Understand and apply cost management which includes initiating change and improve performance
  • Distinguish shipping finance from other types of finance
  • Critically evaluate the different alternatives of financing a ship in order to find the most cost effective alternative
  • Analyse issues relating to the appropriate models and approaches of shipping finance
  • Understand the key macro-economic factors and their effects on shipping investment & finance
